Rebuilding Communities with MHFA Israel

MHFA Israel
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) gives people simple tools to recognize distress, listen with care, and guide others to help. In Israel, we train survivors from the Gaza border to turn trauma into strength and support their communities.

Shani Goren’s Story
On October 7, 2023, Shani Goren from Kibbutz Nir Oz was kidnapped and spent 55 days in Hamas captivity. Even in fear and hunger, she shared food with a 12-year-old boy held with her and gave him strength, preserving moments of humanity.
Returning home was difficult, but out of trauma grew resilience. Today, Shani has turned her experience into a mission of hope as a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) instructor. She now teaches people across Israel how to spot distress, listen without judgment, and connect others to help.
Shani is not alone—through MHFA we are training more survivors from the Gaza border, giving them the chance to turn trauma into strength and empower their communities.
